Nelson Mandela remains in a critical condition in hospital but his health is improving slowly.
He is making ‘slow but steady improvement’, according to South African president Jacob Zuma.
Supporters have feared for the 95-year-old’s health since he was taken to hospital with a lung infection on June 8.
Doctors have even been forced to deny claims that Mr Mandela was close to death and in a ‘vegetative state’.
Mr Zuma thanked South Africans and people around the world who have prayed for the anti-apartheid campaigner and former president.
Mr Mandela’s youngest daughter Zindzi offered hope on Friday that he was on the mend.
‘Tata [father] now manages to sit up, like now he is able to sit up in a chair for a few minutes in a day,’ she said.
‘Every day, you know, he is becoming more alert, more responsive and so on.’
