“Are you writing another report?”

This question was put to me when I was sitting in one of the comfortable chairs in the lobby of the Galway Bay Hotel, slightly “away from the action”, so to speak, as a couple of my good friends in NUI Galway’s Literary and Debating Society wondered why I was sitting apart from others at that time.

Well, I had not been planning on writing any such thing as a report on the “National Maidens” competition, at the time when I had been asked – I was reflecting on what the experience really said about me, and my place in the world of Irish University Debating circles. So, I answered in the negative when asked.

However, the more I thought about it, the more I realised just how formative of an event the competition was – it was my first ever…
