On Saturday Evening of April 27th , Arlene Hunt will host a panel of crime writers including Stuart Neville (Ireland), Arne Dahl (Sweden) and Antti Tuomainen (Finland).

Arlene Hunt (Chairperson)

Arlene Hunt is the author of seven crime fiction novels, five of which feature the popular Quick Investigation duo, John Quigley and Sarah Kenny. She is also the co-owner of Portnoy Publishing.

She lived in Barcelona for five years and now resides in Dublin. Her books have been translated into three languages and her current novel – a stand alone set in the US – entitled The Chosen, was voted as TV3’s Book of the Month for November 2011. An earlier novel, Undertow (2008), was short listed for best crime novel at The Irish Book Awards. Arlene has also contributed to many anthologies, including, Down These Green Streets, Requiems for the Departed and Console.

Stuart Neville

Stuart Neville’s debut novel, The Twelve (published in the USA as The Ghosts of Belfast), won the Mystery/Thriller category of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and was picked as one of the top crime novels of 2009 by both The New York Times and The LA Times.
He has been shortlisted for various awards, including the Barry, Macavity, Dilys awards, as well as the Irish Book Awards Crime Novel of the Year. He has twice been longlisted for the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year. He has since published two critically acclaimed sequels, Collusion and Stolen Souls.
Stuart’s novels have been translated into various languages, including German, Japanese, Polish, Swedish, Greek and more. The French edition of The Ghosts of Belfast, Les Fantômes de Belfast, won Le Prix Mystère de la Critique du Meilleur Roman Étranger and Grand Prix du Roman Noir Étranger.
His fourth novel, Ratlines, about Nazis harboured by the Irish state following WWII was published by Harvill Secker in January 2013.

Arne Dahl

Arne Dahl is an award-winning Swedish crime novelist and literary critic. The Blinded Man is the first book in the internationally acclaimed Intercrime series. The highly praised series of ten novels has sold more than 2.5 million copies and has won its creator such distinguished awards as the premier crime writing awards in Germany, Denmark and Sweden. In 2007 The Swedish Academy of Crime Writers awarded Arne Dahl a special prize for his “vitalization and development of the crime genre through his Intercrime series”. The second book in the series, Bad Blood, will by published by Harvill Secker in 2013.

Antti Tuomainen

Antti Tuomainen was born in 1971 and lives in Helsinki. He was an award-winning copywriter in the advertising industry before he made his literary debut in 2007. In 2011 his third novel, The Healer, was awarded the Clue Award for ‘Best Finnish Crime Novel 2011’. The Finnish press labelled it “unputdownable” and critics praised his piercing and evocative style acknowledging him as one of the first writers to challenge the Scandinavian crime genre formula. The Healer was shortlisted for the Glass Key Award for Best Scandinavian Crime Novel in 2012 (previous winners include Henning Mankell, Stieg Larsson, Jo Nesbo, Arnaldur Indridason, Karin Fossum and HakanNesser).

Cuirt main event looks to be a great night of poetry as two poets share same stage

Tomorrow night the Town Hall Theatre is the place to be as friends and former members of Philip Hobsbaum’s poetry circle in Belfast unite on the one stage and a great night of poetry is in store no doubt. This event is preceded by the Official Opening of the Cúirt International Festival  of Literature 2013 in the Hotel Meyrick in Eyre Square in Galway City at a quarter past 6 and  concluding at a quarter past eight .President of  Ireland  Michael D. Higgins, himself a poet, will officially open Cúirt this year .

Seamus Heaney

Seamus Heaney was born in County Derry. Death of a Naturalist, his first collection appeared in 1966, since then he has also published criticism and translations – including critically acclaimed Beowulf translation  (1999) – which have established him as one of the leading poets now at work.
In 1995 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Stepping Stones, a book of interviews with Dennis O’Driscoll, appeared in 2008 and his most recent book of poems Human Chain (2010) was awarded the Forward Poetry Prize.

Michael Longley

Michael Longley has published nine poetry collections, among them Gorse Fires (1991), winner of the Whitbread Poetry Award, and The Weather in Japan (2000) which won the Hawthorn Prize, the T. S. Eliot Prize and the Irish Times Poetry Prize. His Collected Poems was published by Jonathan Cape in 2006.

His most recent collection A Hundred Doors won the 2011 Irish Times Poetry Now Award. In 2001 he received the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. He was Ireland Professor of Poetry from 2007 to 2010. He is at present working on a new collection and a memoir.
His selection of Robert Graves’s poems will be published by Faber in June 2013.
